Duerr’s Active 10+ honey has been demonstrated in clinical trials to fight Streptococcus pyogenes- the bacteria associated with sore throats and coughs.
It is the first honey to be medically proven to have any active properties when diluted in water or when heated to maximum of 40°C. All other honeys currently discovered simply don’t work when added to water or when heated above 40°C.
The tests performed by Dr James Brennan, Head of Dpt of Applied Science at The Institute of Sligo and his team, demonstrated that Ulmo Active 10 + was 60% more effective than Manuka 25+ and Medihoney at killing this bacteria, before dilution. Vitally, Ulmo Active 10+ continued to kill the bacteria, unlike the other two honeys, which lost all their potency once diluted with water.
The study, commissioned by Healing Honey International Ltd is part of ongoing medical trials to demonstrate the Active honey’s potency against a number of difficult to treat infections and fungi.
Duerr’s Active 10+ honey is available in Ulmo and Quillay varieties, with a smooth creamy texture and delicate flavour. The nectar is collected from the Rio San Pedro estate located in the rainforests of southern Chile, owned by Ian Staples of Healing Honey International.
Richard Duerr of Duerr’s said: “Honey has always been known for its medicinal properties and our Active 10+ honey is proven to be both good for you and delicious. My granny always advised me to have a hot honey drink to cure a cough and sore throat and now I know she was on to something!”
Dr Brennan stated, “We were amazed by the effectiveness of these Active Duerr’s honeys against throat bacteria. What was especially impressive was their effect when diluted, as would occur naturally in the mouth or when taken diluted in a soothing drink. This antibacterial effect was even more impressive when we compared the Active Duerr’s honey to Manuka, that lost its activity when diluted”
Duerr’s Active 10+ Honey (Ulmo & Quillay) is now available from Sainsbury’s nationwide RRP £5.99
